Former Camden Councilman Fills Legislative Vacancy

A former Camden councilman has been tapped to fill the Assembly seat vacated when the incumbent resigned following his arrest on domestic violence charges.

William W. Spearman (D-5) has been sworn-in as the newest member of the state Legislature. He joins state Sen. Nilsa Cruz-Perez (D-5) and Asw. Patricia Jones (D-5) to represent the 5th Legislative District which encompasses parts of Camden and Gloucester counties.

Before taking office in the Assembly, Spearman served on the Camden city council from 2006 to 2011 and had been employed for a decade with the South Jersey Transportation Authority, serving for five years as the agency's ethics liaison officer.

He was chosen to fill the vacancy by Democratic committee members from the areas of Camden and Gloucester counties that make up the district.
