Credit Unions Urged to Vote in Today’s Mid-term Elections

CUNA and the New Jersey Credit Union League (NCJUL) are urging credit union stakeholders to exercise their right to vote in today’s mid-term elections.

image014“Credit union leaders and members make their voices heard throughout the year when it comes to credit union priorities, and Tuesday’s election is another important opportunity to make your voice heard,” said CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle.” In a blast email to credit unions this morning, NJCUL President/CEO David Frankil wrote, “It is not our place to tell anyone how to vote but we ask you to make every effort to go to the polls and participate in this great democracy of ours…… as a credit union member and American citizen, you have a voice, but only if you use it."

CUNA’s “Credit Unions Vote” campaign is still underway, and voters can use CUNA’s CreditUnionsVote.com Web site to make the process easier. The site lets visitors enter basic information to check voter registration status, find their polling place, tweet about voting and more.

A state by state list of candidates supported by credit unions can be found on CUNA’s 2018 Elections Web page.

While the NJCUL has never formally endorsed political candidates, CULAC support is an indication that a candidate is sensitive to the public policy concerns of credit unions. CULAC has supported the following congressional candidates in New Jersey:

  • District 1: Donald Norcross
  • District 2: Jeff Van Drew
  • District 3: Tom MacArthur
  • District 5: Josh Gottheimer
  • District 6: Frank Pallone
  • District 7: Leonard Lance
  • District 9: Bill Pascrell, Jr.
  • District 10: Donald Payne, Jr.
  • District 11: Mikie Sherrill
  • District 12: Bonnie Watson Coleman
  • U.S. Senate: Robert Menendez

The NJCUL also publishes a Lawmaker Scorecard where credit union voters can check how incumbents from the Garden State have voted on key credit union issues over the years.
