New Emerging Leaders Track Gives Credit Union Professionals Tools for Strategic Thinking, Influential Communication, and the Credit Union Mission

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – To foster and empower the aspiring emerging leaders in our industry here in New Jersey, the League added a dedicated Emerging Leaders track for our education at the 2018 Convention, focused on that next generation being groomed to move up the management ladder. It includes hands-on sessions on how to evolve thinking from the tactical to the strategic, developing content and presentation skills, and how credit unions provide a foundation for social good. We even had an Emerging Leader takeover our social media!

In the first session on Sunday afternoon, titled Succeeding in a Challenging Market: Strategies & Tactics for Emerging Leaders, Managing Partner at North Star Strategies Tracy Morgan demonstrated five tools and frameworks for strategic thinking and planning. The Emerging Leaders shared examples and scenarios from their experiences and analyzed why they worked or didn’t work in a given context. Morgan facilitated a discussion among the Emerging Leaders on how they can implement these tools back at their credit unions.

The ever-dynamic Marne Franklin, Digital Director at Your Marketing Company, brought some humor and personal experience to her session titled Owning Your Content and Knowing Your Audience. She empowered Emerging Leaders to find their voice and use it to be influential and impactful. She also drove home the concept of positive reinforcement. "People aren't going to remember everything you say but they're going to remember how you made them feel," she pointed out.

To kick-off his presentation, titled A Foundation of Social Good: Your Members, Their Credit Union, Andy Johnson, Senior Program Manager for the National Credit Union Foundation, had Emerging Leaders split into two group: those who think credit unions are business organizations and those who think credit unions are social organizations. After discussion among the two sides, he dove into the history of the credit union movement and how it influences and impacts the mission of credit unions today. He introduced the group to credit union pioneers Edward Filene, Roy Bergengren, Louise Herring, and Dora Maxwell.
