Congressman Andy Kim to Hold Veterans’ Day Town Hall, Potential Opportunity to Raise NDAA Concerns

Rep. Andy Kim (D-3) announced that he will hold a special Veterans’ Day town hall meeting next month. The town hall will feature veterans from across his district who will share their stories and discuss issues important to the veteran community. Details follow:

  • Veterans’ Day Town Hall
  • Monday, November 11 at 5:00pm
  • Ocean County College, Gateway Building Lecture Hall, College Drive, Toms River

This will be Kim’s fourteenth town hall, and part of a monthly series to allow him to hear directly from constituents throughout his district.

A member of the House Armed Services Committee who is serving on the conference committee ironing out differences in the House and Senate versions of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2020, the Town Hall may present an opportunity for credit unions to express their concern over a provision is the Senate version.

Section 2821 of the Senate version of the NDAA (S.1790) would expand the exemption that allows for the waiving of certain fees and land lease costs for credit unions on military installations. The exemption would be expanded to include other financial institutions that meet the same criteria as credit unions that receive a waiver.

CUNA/League advocacy has already made progress on the issue, helping to ensure removal of a more troublesome provision in the original House NDAA (H.R. 2500) that would have expanded the exemption further than the current language.

The NDAA Call-to-Action continues. Credit union professionals, volunteers and members are encouraged to visit the CUNA/League-system’s Grassroots Action Center where they can easily email or Tweet their members of Congress to tell them to reject the Section 2821 and listing why it would be detrimental to credit unions, members and consumers.

The NJCUL has reached to Kim, and the other three conferees from New Jersey, Reps. Donald Norcross (D-1), Frank Pallone (D-6) and Mikie Sherrill (D-11).

Kim is the special guest of honor at the League’s annual Advocacy Appreciation Reception this Sunday, another opportunity to raise NDAA concerns.
