League and CU Advocates Hike-the-Hill, Meet with NCUA Board Member Harper

The NJCUL and advocates from six credit unions were in Alexandria, Virginia and on Capitol Hill this week to meet with NCUA Board Member Todd Harper and the offices of New Jersey’s congressional delegation.

Reps. Andy Kim (D-3), Donald Payne, Jr. (D-10) and Mikie Sherrill (D-11) took time to personally meet with members of the group.

Field of Membership approvals and the treatment of taxi medallion loans were front and center in the meeting with Board Member Harper. The Capitol meetings focused on the National Defense Authorization Act for FY2020 (S.1790; H.R. 2500), SAFE Banking Act (S.1200; H.R. 1595), ILLICIT Cash Act (S.2563), the continuing problem of data breaches, and the need to preserve credit unions’ access to a viable secondary mortgage market under the Trump Administration’s housing finance reform plans released in September.

The League also schedules in-district meetings when Congress is in recess so those unable to take a full day to travel to Washington still have an opportunity to meet with their Capitol Hill lawmakers.
