It’s Official, Rep. Van Drew Defects to GOP

Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-2) switched parties Thursday to join the GOP one day after he voted against impeaching President Trump. The president made the announcement from the Oval Office with Van Drew by his side.

Elected as a Democrat in an otherwise Republican district, Van Drew is a moderate who prides himself in working across the aisle, He angered Democrats across the state when he voted against launching the presidential impeachment inquiry. Democratic party support began to crumble only to evaporate altogether when he announced he would vote against the actual Articles of Impeachment.

All but one member of his Washington staff resigned following a Saturday meeting where he advised them of his plans to switch parties.

Van Drew has been a strong credit union supporter since his election to Congress in 2018 and while serving in the state Legislature before that.
