NJCUL Marketing Conference Packed with Info and Ideas

HIGHTSTOWN, N.J. – Is your marketing in a language that consumers understand? Is it engaging? Is it compliant? Is it educational? Speakers at the New Jersey Credit Union League’s annual marketing conference held on Tuesday challenged credit union marketers and leaders with these questions and more, then provided tools, resources, insight, and ideas to help them push their marketing efforts forward.

Marne Franklin, CEO of uncommn, gave attendees a pop quiz on the definitions of common terms credit unions use in their marketing (HELOC, LTV, etc.) and how consumers may not be familiar with this jargon. “We sometimes talk in a way that we understand, but our consumers may not understand.” The group then discussed alternate terms and images that can be used that consumers can relate to.

Winner of the League’s 2018 Marketing Award, Linda Laubach from South Jersey FCU then shared the credit union’s secrets behind its successful print newsletter, which has evolved with the times since it launched 25 years ago. She led a discussion amongst attendees about determining relevant, fun content to include; how often the newsletter should be distributed; how to use it as a business development tool; and more.

Laubach uses content provided by CUContent.com in the newsletter. Laura Enock, publisher of CUContent.com, was the next speaker to take to the podium to not only discuss content, but also how to make it engaging, specifically on social media.

Shifting the focus to the compliance side of things, NJCUL VP of Compliance and Regulatory Affairs Nicola Foggie reviewed NCUA rules and regulations concerning advertising, digital advertising, website content, and more. She answered a specific question from the group concerning the term “certificate of deposit” and when it can be used.
